Registration Renewal

We have reached a very important milestone for Interior Design Registration in Iowa! Registration renewals for a number of registered interior designers are due June 30, 2009. Letters will be mailed May 15 by the Interior Design Registration Board to these registrants at their last-known address as notification of their pending registration expiration date.

Certificates of registration expire biennially on June 30. The date of registration renewal is noted on each registered interior designer’s registration card. Following the initial transition period, certificates issued to registrant with last names beginning with A through K expire on even-numbered years and registrants with last names beginning with last names beginning with L through Z expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years. During the transition period some registrants will renew for a one year period to synchronize their registration period according to the beginning letter of their last name. In order to use the title of registered interior designer a registrant is required to renew their certificate of registration prior to the expiration date. A registrant who fails to renew by the expiration date is not authorized to use the title of registered interior designer in Iowa until the certificate is reinstated. Notification of a pending expiration date may be mailed by the Board to a registrant’s last-known address approximately one month prior to the date the certificate of registration is scheduled to expire. Failure to receive this notice does not relieve the registrant of the responsibility to timely renew the certificate and pay the renewal fee. A registrant should contact the board office if the registrant does not receive a renewal notice prior to the date of expiration. Registrants shall notify the board within 30 days of any change of address or business. A registrant who continues to use the title of registered interior designer in Iowa after the registration has expired shall be subject to disciplinary action.

Registered interiors designers in the state of Iowa are required to maintain 12 contact hours of continuing education units (CEUs) within any biennial renewal period. At least 8 hours must be in health, safety and welfare subjects in a structured activity. A maximum of 4 contact hours may be in self directed activities.

  • CEU credits are registered through NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification), the official clearinghouse for IIDA, ASID, IDC, IDEC and other professional interior design organizations offering CEU courses. Courses through other professional organizations (i.e. AIA, IFMA, BOMA) may qualify for CEU credits.
  • A ‘contact hour’ is one 60-minute clock hour of educational activity of which at least 50 minutes is devoted to instructional content.
  • Health, safety and welfare or ‘HSW’ subjects relate to the planning and designing of spaces and elements to minimize the risk of injury to persons or property and relate to the purpose of enhancing the health, safety and well-being of the public.
  • A ‘structured activity’ refers to interior-design related learning led by a qualified individual or sponsored by a professional organization, technical organization, industry source or accredited college or university including monographs, courses of study taught in person or by correspondence, organized lectures, presentations or workshops, formal courses of instruction and other means through which identifiable technical and professional subjects are presented in a planned manner.

Each registrant, at license renewal, is required to submit a Continuing Education log noting of all courses, seminars, workshops or related study that applies to the current registration period. A Continuing Registration Log form is located on the Interior Design Examining Board web site.
