Letter From the President

Leann Pederson, IIDA
Great Plains Chapter President 2018 | 2019

What a year! I am so proud to have served as the President for this amazing Chapter! Just this past weekend, our Chapter was awarded the highest honor from Headquarters when we walked home with the GOLD Award for Chapter Benchmarking!!!! That is absolutely because of all of you – our members, students, sponsors and volunteers that dedicate themselves to our Chapter mission of advancing the profession of Interior Design.

We are thrilled to have won this award, but more importantly – I want to say, ‘Thank You’! Thank you to the Board Members who have shown leadership and applied strategic planning in molding the future of our Chapter. Thank you to our City Center Directors and special committees for all your hard work in planning such successful events. Thank you to our Members for being present and supporting our Chapter. And thank you to our students who have been so involved, it is truly remarkable! We realize it takes a village and are grateful to have the support of your family, friends and employers.

We’ve certainly had a lot of successes this year including another fabulous IDEA Awards where we celebrated design, leadership, sponsors, education and advocacy. But perhaps one of our biggest successes this year was the defeat of the Iowa Senate Bill SF289 to deregulate Interior Design. That would absolutely not have been possible without your voice - so, for those of you who sent letters to your legislators, attended meetings at the capitol or reached out in other ways, we thank you. Your energy and passion matter.

And, I urge each of you that may feel uneducated, especially those early in your career – take this opportunity to learn more about politics because we are going to need you! Look to those who have gone before us to impart their wisdom and to fill us with inspiration. We need to continue the momentum we’ve started this year and continue to educate people in both Iowa and Nebraska about what we do and why it’s so important!

This association allows us the opportunity to enhance ourselves professionally, but I firmly believe it also affects our personal growth, especially for those of you who volunteer your time or sponsor. If you’re looking for ways to get more out of your IIDA Membership, please consider volunteering and helping us sustain our Chapter for future generations.

On behalf of the IIDA Great Plains Chapter Board, thank you again, for your continued support in this community and advocating for the profession of interior design.
