Design like you mean it: A case for designing as if human health and climate stability depended on it.
(0.1 IDCEC)

Can’t I eat some chocolate without knowing who made it and its quantity of saturated fats and caffeine? How about ride my motorcycle with no helmet without someone reciting death tallies? Answer is yes, but being smarter doesn’t necessarily ruin the buzz, it could actually enhance it. The idea of being restricted and constrained is unpleasant for most people, but let’s admit it, as designers, we secretly dig it. It’s what motivates us. It gives us something to push up against. We get to show how deft we are with the budget, doing a whole lot with just a little. Or cleverly balancing unrationalized customer requirements for beauty with increased employee retention, lower operating costs and LEED v4 platinum certification.

Chip DeGrace, VP of Workplace Applications for Interface will talk about the how designing with the people and planet in mind has led his company to consistently create industry leading product systems and doing it while getting the entire company to zero carbon footprint. He will reflect on the buildout of the new HQ for Interface in Atlanta, just being completed. In addition to being tired, he’s fresh with reflections on strategies to achieve your customers’ desire for great workspace, achieving new levels of health and wellbeing of workers and doing it with low imbedded carbon strategies. Please join us in the conversation.

The chocolate’s on us and please ride your motorcycle.

PLEASE SELECT SESSION 1A OR 1B WHEN ORDERING YOUR TICKET, AS BOTH CEU SESSIONS WILL BE OFFERED SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Session 1A: The Noise Around Acoustics

Presented by Patricia Engstrom with MDC
(IDCEC 0.1 HSW, AIA 1.0 LU)

This CEU explores the changing world of acoustics. Evolutions in the built environment are creating an increased need for sound control. Mounting evidence shows that the benefits of adequate acoustics can have rippling positive benefits on occupants. In this one hour presentation, we will explore the changing world of acoustics and how it is translated to tangible benefits in corporate, healthcare, educational, and hospitality spaces.

Session 1B: The Materials Engineering Within The Spectral Art Utilized To Design And Manufacture Institutional Casework And Office Furniture
Presented by Stevens Industries, Inc.
(IDCEC 0.1 HSW, AIA 1.0 LU)

Class Objectives:
To gain insight into the wide array of information on the attributes and features of composite cores,
surfacing materials and hardware used to manufacture quality casework.
To know and understand how these materials support marketable designs plus accommodating the
environmental requirements for your projects.
To obtain guidance on how to utilize this information to facilitate your specification drafting skills, help
you hone your trendsetting designs and help your customers understand and appreciate your designs to
create their visions.
Information to be provided on a comparison basis of the Modular Casework Process to the Architectural
Millwork approach.

This presentation explains the Responsibility of Sustainability and how our collaboration can design products and projects that will deliver a sense of purpose to change the legacy of what we design together.

Course Objectives:

Recognize your role as an influencer in driving the use of healthy building products.

See materials through the lenses of human health and plant health.

Learn which tools are available to inform the way you select and specify healthy building products.

Des Moines CC | FLOOD - A Community-Involved Design Collaboration CEU

Mike Nesbit (Architectural Designer and Fine Artist from Los Angeles), Ross Miller (Architectural Designer, Project Manager, and AIA Omaha Associate Director from Omaha), and Shawn Wentworth (Director of Business Development for Enterprise Precast Concrete from Omaha) will discuss how a community-involved and locally inspired Art/Architectural installation (placed within a forgotten urban infrastructure) can promote design awareness and serve as a catalyst for positive urban renewal. The show is antithetical to the contemporary landmark museum: FLOOD utilizes the existing urban fabric as an alternative to create an exhibition space out of the infrastructure that already exists, a museum that becomes interdependent through partnerships with local industry and small businesses. FLOOD won the Product Design category at the 2018 IDEA Awards. Their newest installation, THE BLUES, opens October 20th near Ames, Iowa.

Lunch will be provided. Contact Allison at abailey@storeykenworthy.com regarding any specific dietary requests.
