This multi-function space within a children's hospital serves as a relaxing place of respite and a lively gathering space for events. This dichotomy posed a complex design challenge, one solved by dynamic color, controls, and architectural integration. The ceiling of the Solarium is simply a work of art and a reflection of the Children’s Nebraska story of light. The multiple tiers are accentuated with color-changing luminaires that gradually become less saturated and ultimately transition to all-white lighting. Several multi-color scenes for holidays, awareness months, and branding were programmed to align with the iconic, illuminated screen on the hospital’s exterior facade. The curves of the acoustical plaster ceiling add interest and control sound to allow several gatherings to occur in the grand space at once. Ceiling heights range from 19’-0” to 30’-0”. Open floor space and varied furniture styles compliment the spaces many functions. The Solarium also acts as a gateway to the new roof garden with youthful sculptures and a backlit river made of sea glass. The Solarium at its core meets patients, families, staff, and the public where they are and mirrors their needs, whether it be selecting their favorite color story on the ceiling, carving out space to reflect, watch movies, or to learn.
