Faced with the challenge of transforming an existing space into an inviting and functional community hub, that also just happens to be a bank, the design team demonstrated excellence across the board. The emphasis was on openness and transparency, avoiding the confines of private spaces and a traditional layout. The designers wholeheartedly embraced this directive, consciously arranging the branch layout with a focus on people. Upon entering, patrons are greeted by a barrier-free lobby, lounge, and teller area, thoughtfully furnished with soft seating to encourage lingering and evoke comfort. A community coffee bar, accessible to anyone, adds a welcoming touch, while NanaWalls forming two sides of the central conference room allow seamless traversal of the space from back to front when retracted, reinforcing a sense of openness. Benson's reputation as a robust cycling community and pedestrian-friendly district also became guiding inspirations for design choices. Notably, the inclusion of a bike-up teller window, in lieu of a traditional vehicle lane, stands as a tangible testament to the bank's commitment to community engagement and the cultivation of a distinctive identity. Mindful of the historical significance of the Benson neighborhood, the project worked within the constraints of an existing building dating back to the early 1900s, presenting less than ideal conditions. Despite the simpler alternative of demolishing and rebuilding, the bank prioritized environmental and community impact instead. The client's directive to incorporate unused fixtures and furniture from other branches showcased a commitment to sustainability, seamlessly integrating into the Scandinavian 'true material' aesthetic of the bank. Coordination with mechanical engineers maximized ceiling height and allows for decorative coffers. Intricate security challenges were meticulously addressed at a shared existing entry/exit stair to ensure user-friendly access for second floor apartments. A carefully curated palette defines the space, with herringbone white oak floors, white walls, black trim, and pops of color from furniture and fixtures. This, coupled with the overlay of the bank's branding and the daily buzz of activity, transforms the space into an inviting, neighborly, and vibrant environment, perfectly aligning with the intended vision.
