The Mesa County Early Childhood Education Center, Training Center and Community Center at Clifton Campus is a transformative space designed to foster interwoven play and community engagement, ensuring that families, educators and county leaders are connected through thoughtful, inclusive design. Situated in the valley of the Western Slope, the center reflects the historic layers of the surrounding landscape through materiality, color and spatial organization. The design is inviting, adventurous, inclusive and joyful, creating an environment where children and families feel a sense of belonging and discovery. Inspired by Mount Garfield and the natural striations of the Western Slope, the design integrates elements that reflect the regional landscape. The reception desk, a central feature, mirrors the mountain range beyond, incorporating interactive elements to engage young children while parents interact with staff. A similar motif is carried into the community reception area, reinforcing the shared identity of the building’s diverse user groups. The center is designed for continuity of care, using color identity within classroom pods to create a seamless progression from infant/toddler spaces through preschool. Each pod features a consistent color tone, providing visual comfort and familiarity as children transition through early education stages. Furniture selections emphasize natural wood tones, maintaining a cohesive connection to the building’s overall palette while allowing for accent colors that subtly define each space. This strategy provides a calming, unified backdrop, supporting dynamic and active learning within the classrooms. At the heart of the classroom design are interactive activity zones strategically placed at connection points between classroom wings. These areas provide additional opportunities for gross motor play, presentations and collaborative learning, serving children from infancy through preschool. The fixed elements within these spaces were designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring accessibility for all age groups. A significant focus of the design was the coordination with MEP consultants to develop a lighting strategy that reflects the project’s core themes of interwoven play and community connection. Carefully curated lighting solutions enhance wayfinding, reinforce spatial hierarchy and create warm, welcoming atmospheres throughout the center. Material selection balances durability, sustainability and sensory engagement. Perforated metal panels on the exterior help define outdoor plaza spaces while serving as a transitional element between indoor and outdoor experiences. Natural wood, warm neutrals and textured surfaces provide tactile experiences that enhance cognitive and sensory development in young learners. Beyond early education, the project serves as a vital community resource. The community center side features multi-purpose spaces that can be rented to accommodate training sessions, daycare provider workshops and local gatherings, which were previously inaccessible in this area. A multi-functional gymnasium and training/meeting rooms provide flexible, adaptable spaces to meet the community's evolving needs. The Mesa County Early Childhood and Community Center is a place of connection, discovery and opportunity. Intentional design solutions foster a holistic, interwoven environment where children, families and the broader community can learn, grow and thrive together.
