This project re-envisioned the workplace strategy for a Fortune 100 corporation’s mid-century modern World Headquarters in Moline, Illinois, transforming an iconic but dated interior into a contemporary, people-centered workplace that enhances employee satisfaction while honoring the building’s architectural legacy. The scope includes a comprehensive interior renovation and infrastructure upgrade, designed and implemented through a multi-phase approach to align with corporate governance and operational needs. Interior design strategies were grounded in extensive engagement with company leadership and employees through surveys, interviews, and industry benchmarking. A consistent theme emerged: while employees valued the building’s historic significance, they did not want to work in a space that felt like a preserved museum. In response, the design team developed and refined multiple workplace concepts that modernize the interior environment while preserving the clarity, openness, and flexibility that defined the original design intent. The project celebrates the building’s early innovations in universal office planning, including modular demountable walls, integrated building systems, and flexible layouts. Interior renovations reinterpret these ideas through contemporary systems that support a range of workstyles. Demountable partitions are paired with custom millwork and flexible furniture to create a balanced mix of collaborative zones, private offices, meeting rooms, and focused work areas. These environments support both individual concentration and team interaction, allowing spaces to evolve as organizational needs change. A major component of the interior transformation is the integration of modern infrastructure within the building’s signature luminous ceiling plane. Upgraded HVAC, lighting, fire protection, security, and wireless systems are carefully coordinated to enhance comfort, performance, and energy efficiency without disrupting the visual continuity of the interiors. Meeting and collaboration spaces incorporate advanced audiovisual technology and room reservation systems, enabling seamless in-person and hybrid work experiences. Interior finishes and furnishings reinforce a contemporary workplace identity while remaining understated and respectful of the original architecture. Environmental graphics, branded elements, and curated accessories and historical archives strengthen corporate culture and wayfinding. Biophilic design strategies including natural materials, interior planting, and visual connections to the surrounding landscape promote wellness and help soften the highly ordered modernist interior. Accessibility improvements are integrated throughout the interior, including widened doorways, updated hardware, and reconfigured circulation paths to ensure equitable access for all users. These enhancements are designed to feel integral to the space, improving usability while preserving architectural coherence. Overall, the interior renovation transforms the headquarters into a dynamic, adaptable workplace that supports contemporary work patterns and encourages employees to return to the office. By balancing flexibility, comfort, and technological integration with respect for an architectural landmark, the project delivers a modern interior environment that reflects the company’s culture, supports collaboration, and positions the headquarters for long-term use.
