The new RADIUS Residential Youth Treatment Facility located in the underserved area of North Omaha provides a temporary residence for youth facing a variety of behavior challenges. In a safe and secure environment, youth undergo therapy and learn life skills to aid in developing their futures, serving Girls and Boys ages 12-18. Focused on restoring relationships between youth, families, and their community, Radius’ core values look at education, empowerment, and development as drivers toward breaking down behavioral risks. The interior environment supports their program’s vision, empowering youth, and families to reach their full potential through community engagement, trauma informed education, and social and behavioral health services as an alternative to detention. Radius stresses avoiding the relocation of youth who are on juvenile probation, and instead allowing for a safe local haven in the community to receive treatment and education, encourages these students to stay connected to their family relationships and local support networks. The design a home-away from home provides safety and comfort for growth during vulnerability. The interior layout generated neighborhoods, maximized exterior connection, circulated interior with light, and provided residents privacy and autonomy appropriate for their acuity and dignity. The 23,000 square foot facility is broken out into a residential, educational, and administrative services building with an adjacent 4,600 square foot outpatient clinic, also providing services to the neighboring community. Key zones were identified to support Activity and Socialization, Play, Learn, Live, Health, and Admin support. Radius’ programming and approach prioritizes instilling a familiar home-like presence rather than an institutional environment. Providing residential, in-home, and in-school behavioral health treatment Services to assist youth and their families before, during and after their time in the program. The open design highlights vibrant colors to evoke the hope of a bright future. Social zones were paired with engaging graphics and art that help stimulate and build trusting relationships between youth, staff, and families. The facility provides youth with the safe, inspiring environment they need while they go on their transformative journeys.
