The Stanley Center for Peace and Security drives global policy change to mitigate nuclear armament, mass atrocities, and climate change. Tracking to achieve full Living Building Certification—only the second renovation in the world to do so—the Center’s headquarters produces over 100% of its energy and water and meets stringent requirements for material health and occupant well-being. The Center’s new home was the former public library. Its prime downtown location strengthens local connections and its history of dedication to learning created immediate alignment with the client’s mission. The building was larger than what they needed so a portion was strategically removed to create an urban agricultural courtyard. The bounty of fresh produce is donated to the neighboring food bank. The courtyard also gives generous daylight and views to interior spaces. The ground floor houses public spaces for collaboration and educational events, while the second floor is zoned for quiet, heads-down activities. Private offices are identically sized and furnished to promote equity. The two offices without courtyard views feature skylights and live plant walls. Furnishings are a combination of new and existing. 98% of new furniture was manufactured hyper-locally, within one mile of the project site. Interior materials, including a pearl button backsplash and white oak, create a connection to place and history by referencing Muscatine’s rich industrial history. Over 50% of the materials came from within 500 kilometers of the site.
