Icon Award
Lisa Schettler, IIDA
Lisa Schettler, IIDA has been in the commercial Interior Design Industry for 20+ years, with experience working in different firms including on the west coast and throughout Iowa. As the Workplace Des Moines Studio leader at Shive-Hattery, she champions the local design team and user experiences, while actively supporting, leading, and mentoring her team within the studio. Lisa extends her leadership to clients and collaborates with other interior designers and design professionals across their 16 offices. Lisa exemplifies an Icon of the IIDA Great Plains Chapter as she led the advocacy efforts in Iowa the past 6 years, including physically writing the bill that was passed to add Stamp and Seal rights for Registered Interior Designers. This verbiage is now being used widely across other states who have now passed the same bill including, Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, and many more. CIDQ, among other design professional entities, are using the verbiage Lisa developed as a basis of standard for Interior Design Stamp and Seal bills moving forward. During the extensive process of passing the bill, Lisa was involved every step along the way including leading townhall meetings for members, attending and speaking at every and all legislative subcommittee meetings, sending countless emails to legislators, providing framework emails for members to also send, and sending email updates to members along the way. Prior to the legislative process, there were countless, and long, meetings with executives from AIA, NCARB, CIDQ, IIDA, and ASID collaborating and vetting out the verbiage she developed that ALL parties ended up agreeing on! Without Lisa coordinating and leading these meetings, we would have never achieved a bill that all parties could support moving forward, which has had a domino effect with the architecture and design community pushing bills without resistance in other states. Without Lisa’s tireless efforts, Iowa, and other states, would not have the Stamp and Seal rights for Registered Interior Designers. She will not take credit for this when it is brought up, and we need to celebrate the incredible work she put into this. Lisa also continues to be one of IIDA’s biggest supporters. She never misses an event, and is always supporting her IIDA peers however she can. Lisa is truly an Icon of the IIDA Great Plains chapter. Explanation of IIDA involvement - President: Fall 2000 - Spring 2001 - Director of Advocacy for DM City Center: multiple years prior to filling VP position. - VP of Iowa Advocacy: Fall 2019 - Spring 2023 - Lisa has been a continuous supporter of advocacy efforts outside of serving on the board before and after her VP term, including when the original Iowa Registration Bill was passed in 2006.
