What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

“Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” A dear friend sent me this quote. It sits on my desk as a good reminder when trying to find balance in running a small business and raising three young kids. Encouraging us to stay true to our values, relationships, and goals.

Who do you look up to and why?

I look up to my mom for her strength. She came to this country from Mexico as a young woman, leaving behind all she had known. She worked hard providing for our family even when times were tough. She taught us to have a foundation in faith, the importance of family, to be grateful for our country, and to always get back up when you fall.

What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on and why?

One of my favorite projects would be a recent Law Office renovation completed by Onpoint Design Co. It was an opportunity to create a space, literally from start to finish, from conceptual design to construction documents, to interior finishes and furnishings. Being able to stamp & seal my own set of plans as a Registered Interior Designer in IA for the first time was a great experience, especially after years of advocacy efforts to pass legislation in IA to make this possible. Collaborating with a trusted and talented team made it even sweeter!

Do you have anything in your home that you’ve designed/created?

Collaborating on projects with my husband is one of my favorite things! He is a builder, not just of homes but of all things. We thrive having a project in the works together. We built our home several years ago and were able to incorporate some custom pieces, including custom built cabinets throughout and custom office furniture. Working through the design together and seeing his fabrication talents bring it to life is the best!

What words of advice do you have for passionate interior designers early in their career?

Never stop learning, knowledge is freedom! Soak up all the knowledge you can, whatever it may be. The more you know, the more choice and opportunities you will have along your path. I am forever grateful to the valuable mentors in my life who took me under their wing and opened my eyes to this industry, taking me to job sites, construction meetings, interviews, design charrettes, etc. Say “yes” to things early in your career, especially those that draw you out of your comfort zone, these are the opportunities that allow you to grow professionally& personally!

How have you found IIDA invaluable?

As a member of IIDA for many years, and having served on the board and various committees during that time, I will say IIDA absolutely made a difference in my path. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work along side the best of the best in our region and created so many friendships along the way. I am so grateful for this community of talented creatives & leaders who truly elevate, advocate, and celebrate the profession of interior design.
